Preparation Strategy
Complete preparation guide for CDS 1 2026
Cracking the UPSC CDS exam requires a dual focus: clearing the rigorous written cut-off and developing the personality traits (OLQs) required for the SSB Interview.
1. Written Exam Strategy
- English (High Scoring): This is the easiest section to score high marks (70+). Focus on Grammar rules (Spotting Errors) and Reading Comprehension. Read The Hindu editoral daily to improve vocabulary.
- General Knowledge (Cut-off Clearing): Do not try to master everything. Focus on Science (NCERT 9th & 10th), Polity (Fundamental Rights/Duties), and Modern History. Current Affairs from the last 6 months (especially Defence news) is critical.
- Mathematics (Speed is Key): For IMA/AFA aspirants, speed is the differentiator. Master shortcuts for Mensuration, Geometry, and Trigonometry. Solve at least 50 questions daily.
2. SSB Interview Mindset (The Real Test)
The SSB is a 5-day process testing your тАЬManas, Vacha, and KarmanaтАЭ (Think, Speak, Act).
- Screening (Day 1): Practice OIR (Officers Intelligence Rating) tests. In PPDT (Picture Perception), write a positive, action-oriented story and speak confidently during the group discussion.
- Psychology Tests: Be honest. In TAT (Thematic Apperception Test) and WAT (Word Association Test), your natural responses reflect your subconscious. Do not fake тАЬheroicтАЭ qualities.
- GTO Tasks: ItтАЩs about Group Dynamics, not individual glory. Cooperate, give logical ideas, and help the group move forward.
3. Physical Fitness
Start running and basic exercises (Push-ups, Sit-ups) immediately. You need stamina not just for the academy but to stay alert during the 5-day SSB process.
4. Mock Tests
Attempt at least 10 full-length mock tests before the exam. Analyze your negative marking pattern carefullyтАФCDS has a 1/3rd penalty which kills scores.
