Preparation Strategy
Complete preparation guide for UPSC CSE 2026
UPSC CSE is not just an exam; itтАЩs a marathon. The biggest mistake aspirants make is studying for Prelims and Mains separately. The тАЬIntegrated ApproachтАЭ is the only key to success.
1. The тАЬIntegratedтАЭ Strategy (Prelims + Mains)
- Foundation (Months 1-4): Read NCERTs (Class 6-12) for History, Geography, and Polity to build a base. Do not touch high-level books yet.
- Core Pillars (Months 5-8): Read standard books (Laxmikanth, Spectrum) along with Mains-specific topics like Ethics, Integrity (GS IV), and World History.
- Optional Subject: Finish 70% of your Optional Subject before the Prelims notification. You wonтАЩt get time after Prelims.
2. Answer Writing (The Rank Decider)
- When to start? After you finish one subject (e.g., Polity), start writing 1 answer daily.
- Structure: Introduction (Definition/Data) -> Body (Arguments with dimensions like Social, Economic, Political) -> Conclusion (Way Forward).
- Ethics & Essay: These two papers constitute 500 Marks. Dedicate separate weekends for them.
3. Current Affairs & Notes
- Newspaper: тАШThe HinduтАЩ or тАШIndian ExpressтАЩ is mandatory. Read ONLY the Editorials and Explained section.
- Monthly Magazine: Supplement newspaper with a monthly compilation (Vision IAS or Forum IAS) to cover missed topics.
- Notes: Make short notes for Mains revision. If itтАЩs not in your notes, you wonтАЩt remember it in the exam hall.
4. Prelims Specific Mode (Last 3 Months)
- Mock Tests: Solve at least 30-40 full-length mocks. Focus on тАЬelimination techniquesтАЭ.
- CSAT: Do not ignore Paper 2. It is qualifying (33%), but thousands fail here. Practice comprehensions and basic quant weekly.
