Preparation Strategy
Complete preparation guide for SSC CGL 2026
SSC CGL is a тАЬMini IASтАЭ exam where your selection depends entirely on your performance in Tier 2. Tier 1 is just a screening test.
1. Tier 1 Strategy (Qualifying)
Since marks are not added, your goal is to clear the cut-off (usually 140-150 for UR).
- Reasoning & Math: These are your scoring subjects. Aim for 45/50 in reasoning.
- GS: Do not waste too much time here. Focus on Current Affairs (last 6 months) and Static GK (Dance forms, Articles, Books).
- English: Master Grammar rules (Subject-Verb Agreement, Prepositions) and Vocab (Blackbook).
2. Tier 2 Strategy (The Real Battle)
Marks of Tier 2 (390 Marks) decide your rank.
- Maths (90 Marks) & Reasoning (90 Marks): You need 100% accuracy here. One silly mistake costs you -1 marks (negative marking) plus the lost 3 marks.
- English (135 Marks): Reading comprehension is key. Read editorials.
- GS (75 Marks): This is the game changer. Read NCERTs for Polity and Geography.
3. The тАЬSilent KillersтАЭ (Computer & Typing)
Many toppers fail because they ignore these:
- Computer Module: It is qualifying but MANDATORY. Read about MS Office, Internet, and Shortkeys.
- Typing Test (DEST): Start typing practice 2 months before the exam. You need 27 WPM speed with high accuracy. Do not leave this for the last week.
4. Mock Test Routine
- syllabus Completion: Finish 70% syllabus by notification.
- Frequency: 1 mock daily for 2 months before the exam.
- Analysis: Spend more time analyzing the mock than taking it. Note down every wrong question in a separate notebook.
